How to Apply for a Marriage License in Wayne County, Illinois
Planning to get married? Here’s everything you need to know about obtaining a marriage license in Wayne County.
When & Where to Apply:
Marriage licenses are issued at the Wayne County Clerk’s Office located at 301 E Main Street in Fairfield, IL.
Office Hours:
Monday – Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Please arrive by 4:15 p.m. to ensure enough time to complete the process.
What You’ll Need:
- A valid government-issued photo ID or certified birth certificate for each applicant
- Applicants must apply in person
- If you are 16 or 17 years old, your legal guardian must be present to give consent and must also present valid identification
- $50 License Fee, payable at the time of application (cash or card accepted)
Our staff will assist you in completing the application and answer any questions you may have.
Important Guidelines:
- Marriage licenses issued in Wayne County are only valid within Wayne County
- The license becomes effective at midnight on the day it is issued
- The license is valid for 60 days from the effective date

Additional Notes
- No blood tests are required
- If either applicant has been previously married, you may be asked to provide the date and manner of the dissolution (e.g., divorce or death)
- Certified copies of your marriage certificate can be requested after the ceremony through the Clerk’s Office
