Dear Wayne County Taxpayers and Residents,

My goals as your Treasurer are simple:

  1. To make paying property taxes in Wayne County as easy and as accessible as possible

  2. To safely keep and distribute property tax money to taxing districts and

  3. To help taxpayers understand problems and resolve issues related to property tax payment.

I have had the pleasure of working in public service since 1997 and know the value of running an efficient, professional, and helpful office. TREASURER & COLLECTOR DUTIES

The Wayne County Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the collection and distribution of real estate taxes in the county. Property taxes are collected in two installments, with distributions sent out to the many taxing bodies throughout the county. Duties related to property taxes include:

  • Collection of annual property taxes with two due dates each year
  • Sending notice of delinquent taxes
  • Overseeing the annual tax sale of unpaid parcels
  • Distributions of tax monies collected to taxing bodies throughout the county
  • Annual reporting to the Illinois Department of Revenue
  • Administering the Monthly Prepayment Program (MPP)
  • Collection of mobile home taxes
  • Refunding property owners for taxes paid prior to a correction or Sale in Error
  • The Treasurer is also charged with maintaining the financial operations of the county, including banking, collection of revenue, disbursement of accounts payable, investment management, establishing an investment policy, and financial reporting to the public and Wayne County Board.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

Taxes may be paid:

  1. by mail
  2. at designated banks
  3. online (September through December only)
  4. in our dropbox at the west side of the courthouse
  5. in our office on the main floor of the Wayne County Courthouse.
    Taxes must be paid on or before the due date.

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  1. Taxes must be paid in full in one payment if paid on or before the first due date or it can be paid in two installments.
  2. Installments are due on or before the dates shown on the bill.
  3. A penalty is effective after the due date pursuant to State Statues. Interest is added at a rate of 1.5% per month effective on the first day following each due date. Parts or fractions of a month will be considered as a whole month.
  4. Mailed payments must be postmarked on or before the due date.
  5. If you use online bill pay, you must put the correct property number on your check or it will be returned.
  6. Non clearance of checks voids the payment.
  7. If paying in person, in our office, we accept cash, check, debit or credit cards (fees applied) or other certified funds.

ONLINE PROPERTY TAX INFORMATION

Property tax bills can be paid online, September through December by visiting www.waynecountyiltax.com, with debit/credit card or e-check. Accept the disclaimer, and you will be directed to the home page. From this point, you can either search by the property owner’s name or by the parcel number. The fee for this service will be disclosed prior to finalizing payment.

ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Mobile Home Tax Information- The due date for Mobile Home Taxes is July 1st of each year. By statute, a penalty of $25.00 a month, up to $100.00, is charged after the deadline. If you did not receive a bill and should have, please contact us at 618-842-5087.

After this tax cycle is completed, you may apply for the PRE-PAYMENT PLAN for future tax billings at the County Treasurer/Collector’s office. Call 618-842-5087 for more information.

If your mortgage company pays your taxes for you, it is your responsibility to forward the bill to them.
If you no longer own this property, forward the bill to the new owner or return to the Treasurer’s office.

Returned checks- Non-payment of check by your bank voids receipt. A $25.00 fee, plus bank charges incurred, will be added to your bill if check is returned to us for any reason. Penalties continue to accrue until taxes are paid.

Failure to receive a tax bill or receiving it late, for any reason, will not relieve the property owner from the responsibility of paying taxes, penalties and fees.
